4 dead, several injured as Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derails

Gonda: At least four people died and several others sustained injuries after eight coaches of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express derailed in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda on Thursday. Police stated that some coaches of the passenger train, which was en route to Dibrugarh, derailed between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations. Train number 15904 was heading to Dibrugarh in Assam from Chandigarh.

Senior railway and local administration officials are on-site to supervise rescue operations. At least 13 trains were either diverted or canceled following the derailment.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the incident and directed officials to expedite the relief work at the site of the accident. “The train accident in Gonda district is extremely sad. District administration officials have been directed to carry out relief and rescue operations on a war footing and to take the injured to the hospital on top priority and provide them with proper treatment. I pray to Lord Shri Ram for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said.

Special buses have been arranged for the remaining passengers of the train from Mankapur Junction to Dibrugarh.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi government of "jeopardizing rail safety" in the wake of the accident.
