3-year-old girl trapped in 700 ft borewell in Rajasthan; rescue ongoing

Jaipur: A three-year-old girl, Chetna, has been stuck in a 700-foot borewell in Rajasthan's Kotputli-Behror district for over 20 hours, sparking a major rescue operation. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the state’s State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are actively working to save the girl.

The incident occurred while Chetna was playing on her father’s farm, and she accidentally slipped into the borewell. She is currently trapped at a depth of around 150 feet, with her movements being monitored through a camera.

Rescue teams initially attempted to dig around the borewell but faced challenges due to compacted soil caused by moisture. An oxygen pipe has been lowered into the borewell to ensure the girl receives adequate air during the operation. The rescue teams are now working with a hook attached to a rod to pull Chetna out.

Officials are hopeful that she will be rescued soon.

This incident marks the second such case in just two weeks in Rajasthan. Earlier, a five-year-old boy, Aryan, fell into a 150-foot-deep borewell in Dausa district while playing in a field. Despite being rescued after a 56-hour operation, Aryan was later declared dead in the hospital.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) issued a notice to the Rajasthan government and police last week regarding the tragic incident. The NHRC noted that the authorities’ failure to adhere to Supreme Court and central guidelines on preventing such accidents could be considered a violation of people's right to life. The commission has demanded a detailed report on the matter within two weeks, including the status of the FIR, actions taken against public authorities, and compensation for the victim's family.
