Bhubaneshwar (Odisha): More than a hundred bodies of victims of Odisha train tragedy remain to be identified, official said on Monday.
India’s most horrific tragedy yet left nearly 1000 people injured when three trains ended up piling on each on other last Friday evening in Odisha.
At least 278 passengers were killed, giving rise to concerns about safety of one of the world’s largest train networks.
Rinkesh Roy, Divisional Railway Manager of the Eastern Central Railways, told ANI that nearly 200 people are still in treatment in several hospitals in Odisha.
‘About 1,100 people were injured in the accident, out of which about 900 people were discharged after treatment. Around 200 people are being treated in various hospitals in the state. Out of 278 people who died in the accident, 101 bodies are yet to be identified,’ Roy was quoted as saying.
Vijay Amrit Kulange, Commissioner, of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation, said as many as 80 of the total 193 bodies kept in Bhubaneswar have been identified.
BMC's helpline number 1929 received more than 200 calls from the public while 55 bodies have been handed over to relatives.
Reports say that the Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express hit a stationary freight train, derailing the coaches to nearby tracks subsequently involving Howrah Express passing on the same track.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the Balasore accident site and the injured at the hospital.
