1 dead, 30 trapped as under-construction bridge collapses in Bihar

Patna: One person was killed and several others remain trapped after an under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Supaul on at 7 am today.

Local authorities and volunteers are carrying out rescue operations at the construction site near Maricha, NDTV reported.

Authorities reportedly said that 30 workers could still be trapped under the debris.

The bridge was being built over the river Kosi at a cost of ₹ 984 crore.

The accident follows another under-construction bridge collapse in Bihar's Bhagalpur.

The four-lane bridge, aiming to link Bhagalpur and Khagaria districts, constructed over the river Ganges collapsed, sparking argument between the state government and the opposition BJP.

The bridge, costing over ₹ 1,700 crore , was to be completed by 2019.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone for the bridge in February 2014.
