Mumbai: Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal is likely to play iconic Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand in a biopic directed by Abhishek Chaubey. The makers have been in talks with the actor for a while and the deal is reportedly advancing.
A source close to the project told Pinkvilla that Vicky Kaushal was extremely impressed when he heard the story and is excited about the project. "While the conversation between him and the makers has been going on for some time, now it has moved to the advanced stage. Both the actor and the makers are keen to collaborate on this project, but they will take a final call on the shooting schedule and other formalities post Sam Bahadur."
Earlier, producer Ronnie Screwvala announced that the biopic will be directed by Abhishek. "1500+ goals, 3 Olympic gold medals, and a story of India’s pride. It gives us immense pleasure to announce our next with #AbhishekChaubey - a biopic on the Hockey Wizard of India - #DHYANCHAND," tweeted the filmmaker.
Later, it was reported that Ishaan Khatter is going to play the lead but the casting changed soon after.
Vicky Kaushal has already worked on three films with Ronnie Screwvala - Love per Square Foot, Uri: The Surgical Strike, and Sam Bahadur.
Meghna Gulzar-directed Sam Bahadur is based on the life of Sam Manekshaw who was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The film is slated to be released on December 1, 2023.
