Hyderabad: Rajamouli directorial RRR continues to break records and has now become the highest-grossing Indian movie in Japan. The record was previously held by Rajinikanth starrer 'Muthu' for 24 years.
Starring Ram Charan and NTR, the epic movie set amid India's freedom struggle was released in Japan in November 2022. It earned over 403 million Yen (approximately Rs 24 crores) at the Japanese box office. The team visited Japan to promote the movie.
RRR was released in March 2022 and has earned fans across the world, especially in Hollywood. It also got two Golden Globe Awards nominations. The multi-starrer is the only Indian film to reach the top 5.
Among the top three Indian hit movies in Japan is another Rajamouli directorial Baahubali.
The Telugu-language action drama film is about the fictionalised friendship between two real-life Indian revolutionaries, Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao). The duo fought against the British Raj in the 1920s. The plot centres on the undocumented period in their lives. With a budget of Rs 550 crore, RRR is the most expensive Indian film to date. It earned Rs 1,200 crore at the global box office.
Muthu is a 1995 Tamil-language film starring Rajinikanth, Meena, Sarath Baby. It is a remake of the Malayalam film Thenmavin Kombath. Its success in Japan helped Rajinikanth to develop a large fan following in the East Asian island nation. It also sparked a short-lived boom of Indian films.
