As the 97th Academy Awards shortlists were revealed in ten categories, including Best International Feature, India's Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) is no longer in the running for an Oscar. Santosh, another Indian film that was officially entered this year and co-produced by the UK, made it to the shortlist.
Nonetheless, Guneet Monga Kapoor's live-action short Anuja has advanced to the category's shortlist. The use of child labour in the garment industry is the main topic of the movie.
The Oscar shortlist is compiled from entries from 85 countries and includes 15 films. This year's list includes films including Emilia Perez, The Girl With The Needle, and From Ground Zero. Laapataa Ladies, India's official entry, was directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Aamir Khan. It tells the story of two young women in rural India who discover themselves after being separated from their husbands.
