Munjya reaches Rs 100 crore milestone, surprise for sluggish Bollywood box office

In a surprising turn of events during a sluggish period for Bollywood, the horror-comedy "Munjya" has emerged as a massive box office hit, crossing the Rs 100 crore mark in just 17 days.

The film’s production house, Maddock Films, celebrated the milestone on Instagram, stating, “Munjya laughs and scares its way to 100 Cr! Thank you for the historic third weekend. We couldn’t have done it without you!”

The film has a comparatively small budget of Rs 30 crores.

Official figures from the production house indicate that the film's gross collection has surpassed Rs 103 crore, with a net collection of Rs 87.35 crore. "Munjya" had a strong start, earning Rs 4 crore on its opening day and accumulating Rs 36.50 crore in its first week. The film continued its success, bringing in Rs 32 crore during the second week.

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, "Munjya" features a talented cast including Sharvari Wagh, Abhay Verma, Mona Singh, and Sathyaraj. The film is set in the Konkan region of Maharashtra and is steeped in Marathi folklore, focusing on the mythical creature Munjya and its disruptive impact on the life of Bittu, played by Abhay Verma, who is known for his role in "The Family Man."

"Munjya" is Maddock Films’ fourth venture into the horror-comedy genre, following the success of "Stree," "Roohi," and "Bhediya." The production house is also gearing up for the release of "Stree 2," starring Rajkummar Rao, in the coming weeks.

Sharvari Wagh, reflecting on the film’s success, expressed her excitement, told The Indian Express, "Munjya is off to a flyer at the box office and I have to admit that I’m over the moon right now. To have a big success under my belt is, of course, a huge confidence booster for me. My social media is flooded with love from across the country. That too is a huge validation for my work."
