As activists and sympathizers around the world express their solidarity with Palestine's right to live on their land against Israeli occupation and onslaught, which has resulted in numerous deaths, they use various forms of expression, including displaying images and emojis of a slice of watermelon representing Palestinian resistance
Indian actor Kani Kusruti also made a similar political statement of solidarity with Palestine at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23 by carrying a bag shaped like a slice of watermelon during the red carpet event of her film 'All We Imagine As Light, according to a report published on The New Minute.
This symbol, which first emerged in 1967 after Israel seized control of the West Bank and Gaza, mirrors the colours of the Palestinian flag with its red flesh, black seeds, white rind, and green outer skin. The watermelon has been used historically to circumvent Israeli restrictions on displaying the Palestinian flag.
Kusruti's act of solidarity comes amidst heightened tensions in Gaza, where the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in the deaths of at least 35,709 people, including more than 15,000 children. This gesture aligns her with a global movement where activists use watermelon emojis and stickers online to show their support for Palestine.
Joining Kusruti in this demonstration of solidarity were international actors Cate Blanchett and Leila Bekhti. Blanchett wore a gown reminiscent of the Palestinian flag, while Bekhti donned a heart-shaped pin featuring the watermelon’s seeded pattern. These acts were subtle yet significant displays of support for Palestine on an international stage.
The film "All We Imagine As Light," directed by Payal Kapadia, features a cast including Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon. The story revolves around Nurse Prabha in Mumbai, whose routine is disrupted by an unexpected gift from her estranged husband, and her roommate Anu, who struggles to find privacy for her relationship. The narrative takes them to a beach town where they seek to fulfil their desires.
The film received an 8-minute standing ovation at its premiere, during which Kusruti proudly displayed her watermelon bag once more.
