Kandukondain Kandukondain ranks third among Jane Austen adaptations globally

Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain has ranked third among Jane Austen's novel adaptations across the world 20 years after its release. It is now being recognised as one of the best adaptations of the iconic writer's novel.

Director Rajeev Menon based the story of the film on the 1811 novel Sense and Sensibilities. Starring Mammootty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Tabu, and Ajith in the lead, the film was called a progressive film encouraging female independence.

Like other Jane Austen novels, Sense and Sensibility remains to be a universally relevant story after years. It tells the story of two sisters who are forced to move into a less modest home after the death of their father because women did not inherit wealth. The plot follows them adjusting to a new life, falling in love, getting hurt, and finding their footing.

Rajeev Menon adapted the story for the Indian audience without losing its essence. To celebrate the recognition, he took to Instagram and wrote: "Twenty-two years down the line, 'Kandukondain' is still being recognised worldwide as one of the better adaptations of Jane Austen. The script, the music, and the actors still live in people's memories. It fills my heart with gratitude that a film one made so passionately in some ways withstands the test of time. Thank you to everyone and the team of the film."

The report ranked 21 films with the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightly ranking first. This comes as no surprise due to the timeless popularity of the film. Ranking second on the list is another adaptation of Sense and Sensibility starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet.

Indian film Aisha (2010) starring Sonam Kapoor ranked 20th on the list.
