Jay Shetty's credibility and life story as monk challenged in investigative report

Renowned British podcaster and life coach, Jay Shetty, is facing scrutiny following allegations of plagiarism and fabrication in his life story.

Shetty, known for his best-selling book 'Think Like A Monk: Train Your Mind for Peace and Purpose Every Day,' is under investigation after discrepancies surfaced regarding his narrative and educational background.

Shetty's official website claims, "During his school years, Jay Shetty spent vacations living with monks in India, immersing himself in their wisdom and teachings." However, an investigative report by The Guardian challenges this narrative, asserting that Shetty falsely stated spending three years in an Indian temple.

The 36-year-old, born in London, hosts the "On Purpose" podcast, featuring prominent guests like Michelle Obama, Kim Kardashian, and the late Kobe Bryant. Shetty also operates the Jay Shetty Certification School, where students reportedly pay thousands of dollars to learn his discipline.

The report questions the accuracy of Shetty's personal story and educational qualifications. It suggests that Shetty, after graduating, claimed to forgo material success to live as a monk for three years, only to later transform into a self-help personality. The report challenges the authenticity of Shetty's riches-to-rags-to-riches backstory.

Allegations extend to misrepresentations in Shetty's biography, including the claim that his life changed at 18 after hearing a lecture by a monk. The report points out discrepancies in Shetty's resume, such as a degree in behavioral science from a business school that reportedly doesn't offer the course.

The investigation also highlights Shetty's use of his spiritual identity to generate substantial income.

The report alleges that Shetty demands large sums for his guidance and operates various subscription and education services, including a life-coaching school charging $7,400 per term for "Postgraduate Diploma (Level 7) qualifications."

Regarding his affiliation with the Hare Krishna movement, Shetty is reported to be reserved, possibly due to controversies surrounding the organization. Shetty is described as a "Vedic monk" rather than explicitly mentioning Iskcon, the Hare Krishna movement.

Jay Shetty has faced previous accusations of plagiarism.

In 2019, he reportedly removed over 100 posts from social media platforms after the exposure of original sources by YouTuber Nicole Arbour. Many of Shetty's "original" videos were found to be based on pre-existing parables and viral social media posts.

Despite controversies, Jay Shetty remains a prominent figure, recently officiating the wedding of Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck. The investigative report sheds light on the challenges to Shetty's credibility and raises questions about the authenticity of his public persona.
