Avatar 2: Indian box office collects Rs 80 crore in two days

Avatar: The Way of Water is having a good weekend at the Indian box office with Rs 40 crore on Friday and Rs 40.5 crore on Saturday. Some are predicting a Rs 125 crore net collection over the weekend.

However, Avatar's Indian box office collection is far behind that of its overseas collection. In the US, the James Cameron film made $53 million in the first two days. In the international market, it made $127.1 million over three days, said a statement from Disney.

The studio has predicted that Avatar 2 will make between $130-150 million in North America. The Way of Water is distributed on over 12,000 screens in the US and Canada. It is also on 40,000 screens internationally. It is being released at the same time all over the world which is rare in the entertainment business.

However, theatre chains are not entirely happy with the performance because they expected a stronger turnout.

The anticipated box office collection would have put Avatar 2 alongside the biggest movies of the year - Paramount Global's Top Gun: Maverick ($52 million) and Universal's Minions: The Rise of Gru ($48 million).

The epic sci-fi film is set a decade after the original. Jake Sully is living as the chief of Omaticaya and raising a family with Neytiri.
