DTPC raze down 3,000 illegal shanties in Gurugram

Gurugram: Department of Town and Country Planning's (DTCP) enforcement team demolished 3,000 of 15,000 shanties here in an enormous demolition drive. The drive, carried out on Thursday, was in Saraswati Kunj colony located along the Golf Course Road, IANS reported.

District town planner RS Batth said that the enforcement team, which included 20 officials supported by around 150 police personnel, carried out the 6-hour drive. "The team demolished 3,000 shanties which were set up illegally. We had received several complaints from the residents following which the action was taken," he said.

The team seized the materials used to build illegal shanties. The demolition drive is to continue for another few days, officials informed.

Batth said that move was made after directions given by the Chief Minister to remove illegal encroachments in a recent grievance committee meeting.

Officials said that locals get paid around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000 rent for the illegal shanties.

Officials said that DTCP had given three to four days prior notice and announcements for the encroachers to remove the illegal buildings on their own.

Also, ten other illegal establishments were demolished.
