New Delhi: Two unidentified men shot Deljhi BJP leader Surendra Matiala dead at his office on Friday evening, NDTV reported citing police.
Police said that around 7:30 in the evening, Matiala and his nephew were watching TV, and two men entered the office in Dwaraka with faces covered. They beat up the BJP leader before shooting him four to five times at the close range. After the deed, the two fled the place, police said.
Police added that there were three attackers, and when two entered the office, the third waited for them with a motorcycle outside. After the crime, all three escaped in the same motorcycle, police said.
Matiala's son said that his father has no enmity with anyone and added that he hopes the police arrest the murderers soon.
Despite the leader's family naming no enemy or suspect, police believe that there could be some p[ersonal vendetta behind the killing. Police learned that Matiala had some property disputes with some people, and police are probing the same.
Deputy Commissioner of Police of Dwarka Harsha Vardhan informed that they had formed five teams to search for the three attackers. CCTV footage from the area is under scrutiny for potential leads.
It was around two weeks ago, a BJP leader was shot dead at Shaktigarh in West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman. The leader Raju Jha was also a businessman with some colleagues in a car when he was attacked. He was rushed to hospital but was declared brought dead.
This year, there were multiple reports of BJP leaders being shot dead in Chhattisgarh.
