Government data shows India's WPI inflation declined to 12.96% in January

Data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry show wholesale inflation across the country increased to 12.96 per cent in January.

Wholesale inflation across the country increased to 12.96% in January, according to data released by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry.

Starting in April 2021, the WPI inflation rate remains in double-digits for a tenth consecutive month.

"The high rate of inflation in January, 2022 is primarily due to rise in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum & natural gas, basic metals, chemicals and chemical products, food articles etc as compared the corresponding month of the previous year," the government release said.

Compared with December 2021, vegetable prices rose 38.45 per cent in January while potato prices fell 14.45 per cent and onions prices dropped 15.98 per cent. On the other hand, fruit prices boomed 12.50 per cent last month.

In January, egg, meat and fish prices increased 9.85 percent, while cereal prices rose 5.48 percent.

Last month, manufacturing products increased by 9.42 percent, down from 10.62 percent in December 2021.

A separate release of retail inflation or CPI data for today will be made by the government.
