Smartphones have become India’s top export category, with overseas shipments worth $30 billion in January to December 2025, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday.
Sharing the update in a social media post, the minister said India was becoming the smartphone manufacturing factory for the world.
A graphic accompanying the post described smartphones as India’s number one export category, citing $30 billion in exports during 2025.
In 2024-25, mobile phones worth Rs 5.5 lakh crore, or about $60 billion, were produced in India. Exports from the segment during the same period were around Rs 2 lakh crore, or about $22 billion.
Electronics exports from India have crossed Rs 4 lakh crore, or $44 billion, in 2025. The figure is expected to rise further when four semiconductor plants begin production this year.
Neil Shah, Co-Founder and Vice President for Research at Counterpoint, said India is likely to touch nearly 30 crore units of mobile phone production, with an estimated one in four smartphones produced in the country exported in 2025.
He said the high average selling price of the US market has been a major export destination, driven by companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Motorola, boosting overall export value to record levels.
According to the Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker by International Data Corporation for the third quarter of 2025, Apple recorded its highest-ever quarterly domestic sales of 50 lakh iPhones.
Apple leads the premium and super-premium smartphone segments in India, helping drive overall market growth in the September quarter.
