San Franciso: A lawsuit has been filed against Twitter in the US on the company's mass layoffs without giving employees advanced written notice, media reports suggested on Friday.
The case was filed in the US District Court in the Northern District of California, citing violation of worker protection laws, including the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act as well as the California WARN Act, against the company, which has been taken over by Elon Musk recently. The above-mentioned acts mandate 60 days of advance notice, TechCrunch reported.
The petitioners said that they were terminated from service on November 3, locking them out of their accounts.
They said, "Twitter is also enacting widespread layoffs across its workforce today, on Nov. 4, 2022, it stated, adding that California's Employment Development Department had not received a notice related to the event."
Petitioners pleaded through their case for the court to declare that Twitter violated the federal and California WARN Acts. They also demanded the court to "certify the case as a class action suit".
The case also seeks "a range of relief, including compensatory damages (including wages owed), as well as declaratory relief, pre and post-judgment interest, plus other attorneys' fees and costs", the report quoted the petitions.
The deal, under which the Twitter takeover was done, mandates payment of 60 days of salary and the cash value of the stock for laid-off employees.
The fresh owner of the platform, Musk, is also facing a class-action lawsuit after he laid off employees without any proper notice at Tesla, the company he founded.
