Foxconn proposes Rs 8,800 crore manufacturing plant in Karnataka

Bengaluru: Foxconn, a key iPhone assembler for Apple, has put forth a proposal to establish a supplementary plant worth Rs 8,800 crore in Karnataka in addition to its existing unit in the Devanahalli Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR).

M B Patil, the state's Large and Medium Industries Minister, revealed this development on Monday.

A high-level meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, wherein delegates from Foxconn Industrial Internet (Fii), led by CEO Brand Cheng, discussed the proposal. According to the plan, Fii, a subsidiary of Foxconn (also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry), intends to invest Rs 8,800 crore and generate approximately 14,000 job opportunities. The project would require around 100 acres of land. The Fii delegates will visit Tumakuru to assess the available land near the district headquarters, specifically in the Japan Industrial Township.

Information Technology Minister Priyank Kharge and Chief Secretary Vandita Sharma were also present during the meeting to discuss the project.

The manufacturing activities at the Fii plant would encompass screens, outer coverings, and mechanical components essential for phones. This supplementary plant would complement the existing "end assembly" unit located at Devanahalli ITIR, according to Minister Patil's statement.

To facilitate the establishment of the manufacturing unit, the state is ready to extend complete support, including the provision of the required land spanning 100 acres within the Japanese Industrial Park near Tumakuru, Patil said in a tweet.

Last week, Patil highlighted that the land allocation process for Foxconn's mobile device manufacturing unit at Devanahalli ITIR, an approximately 300-acre facility, is in its final stages. He emphasised the significance of Foxconn as a prestigious manufacturer for Apple and stated that the company plans to invest $1 billion (approximately Rs 8,400 crore) and create 50,000 employment opportunities during the first phase of the Devanahalli ITIR project.

The establishment of Foxconn's supplementary manufacturing plant in Karnataka reflects the company's continued investment in India and is expected to boost the state's industrial sector while generating significant employment opportunities.
