New Delhi: China has filed a complaint against India at the World Trade Organization (WTO), challenging New Delhi’s subsidies for electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal stated that the ministry will review the detailed submissions made by China. An official confirmed that China has also initiated similar WTO applications against Turkiye, Canada, and the European Union.
“They have sought consultations with India,” the official added. Under WTO rules, seeking consultations is the first step in the dispute settlement process. If consultations with India do not lead to a satisfactory resolution, China may request the WTO to establish a panel to examine and rule on the matter.
China is India’s second-largest trading partner. In the last fiscal year, India’s exports to China fell 14.5 per cent to USD 14.25 billion, down from USD 16.66 billion in 2023-24, while imports from China rose 11.52 per cent to USD 113.45 billion from USD 101.73 billion. As a result, India’s trade deficit with China widened to USD 99.2 billion during 2024-25.
This development marks a significant step in the ongoing trade disputes between the two nations, with potential implications for India’s EV and battery manufacturing sector.
