Applications invited by Tata Steel from transgenders for various jobs

Tata Steel announced on Monday that it has made a big step towards encouraging diversity by welcoming applications from transgender applicants for various positions across multiple regions.

Tata Steel, one of the world's leading steel firms with an annual crude steel capacity of 35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), acknowledges the importance of breaking the glass ceiling and mainstreaming transgender persons in society, the business stated.

“Transgender candidates with any of the following qualifications can apply: Matriculation in English or ITI or graduation in any discipline or diploma in engineering in any discipline from any institute recognized by AICTE or UGC or Degree in B.E./B. Tech in any discipline from any institute, recognized by AICTE or UGC,” the company said.

The organisation stated that all shortlisted candidates will go through a selection procedure that may involve a written test and an interview, depending on the requirements.

In February 2022, the steel producer increased its transgender workforce by hiring 12 crane operator trainees from the LGBTQ+ community at its Kalinganagar factory in Odisha.

Prior to this, Tata Steel's captive mining business in Jharkhand's West Bokaro had hired 14 transgender workers as Heavy Earth Moving Machinery (HEMM) operators at its mines.

The well-thought-out intervention not only addressed the unconventional subject of hiring transgender people in their blue-collar workforce but also gave a road map for other businesses to negotiate the arduous routes to full inclusion, according to a corporate representative.

The corporation established the framework for hiring minority groups by increasing gender diversity in their core activities before hiring transgender people in their mining sector.

Tata Steel employs around 77,000 people across five continents and aims to have a 25% diverse workforce by 2025.
