In a moment that has sparked further debate about his fitness for office, President Joe Biden mistakenly declared his intention to defeat former President Donald Trump "again in 2020" during a campaign rally on Friday before quickly correcting himself to say 2024.
This latest verbal slip comes amid growing concerns from some Democrats regarding the 81-year-old president's ability to endure a second term, particularly following his lackluster performance in the first presidential debate against Trump.
Despite these concerns and calls for him to step aside, Biden remains resolute in his bid for re-election, as he reiterated to an enthusiastic crowd in Madison, Wisconsin. The presidential election is scheduled for November 5.
During the debate, Biden appeared to struggle with finishing sentences, seemed confused, and spoke in a hoarse voice, which aides attributed to a cold. However, the US President insisted that fatigue was the only issue and that there were "no indications of any serious condition."
A Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates that one in three Democrats believe Biden should end his re-election bid following his poor debate performance. However, the poll also suggests that no prominent elected Democrat currently performs better than Biden in a hypothetical matchup against Trump.
