Rome: An Indian farm labourer who was abandoned like a ‘bag of rubbish’ on an Italian farm following an accident that severed his arm died, news agency AFP reported.
Working on a farm without legal papers in Latina, a rural area south of Rome, Satnam Singh was gravely injured on Monday.
The Flai CGIL trade union reportedly said that Singh, aged 30 or 31, was cutting hay with a machine when his arm was sliced off.
Reacting to the incident Labour Minister Marina Calderone told parliament: "The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions... has died."
Marina Calderone termed the abandoning of the man ‘a true act of barbarity," adding that probe is underway and hoped to punish those responsible for it .
The Flai CGIL trade union said "Instead of being helped by his employers he was dumped like a bag of rubbish near his home," adding it was like a "horror film".
Police said an air ambulance was sent to pick Singh after his wife and friends alerted them of the incident.
"He was flown to a hospital in Rome but he died (today) around midday," AFP quoted a police spokesman in Latina as saying.
Condemning the treatment to the man, the centre-left Democratic Party termed the incident a "defeat for civilisation".
The incident was reported from an area which is known for the exploitation of workers, according to the report.
