Taliban welcomes UN resolution promising presence in Afghan

Kabul: The Taliban in Afghanistan welcomed a United Nations Security Council resolution which officially promised its presence in the conflict-torn nation, Agence France-Presse reported.

Taliban said that it is a good step and the group want the UN to work effectively on resolving many problems, including humanitarian issues. It promised the UN its cooperation.

So far, the international community has not recognised the Taliban as Afghanistan's formal administration. The UN has not recognised the Taliban's representative as its envoy to the global organisation.

The resolution tabled on Thursday, avoiding the word "Taliban", allowed the world body to continue work in Afghanistan, which is under the pressure of the broken economy after decades of war plus the past year's fall of Kabul. The international community had cut many of the aids after the Taliban took over the country.

The resolution, United Nations Assistance Mission for Afghanistan (UNAMA), gathered 14 votes in favour while Russia abstained.

The UN mission includes cooperation, resolution for humanitarian and political issues in the country as well as issues relating to women, children and journalists.

The resolution was drafted by Norway, and its envoy to the UN said that UNAMA has a key role to play in Afghanistan in promoting peace and stability. The people there face unprecedented challenges and uncertainty, he said.

Though the security situation seems improved in the nation after last August's turmoil, the humanitarian crisis took another lunge.

The UN, along with other aid agencies, had informed that more than half of the Afghan population remains hungry. The country is one among the world's poorest, and the youth is entirely traumatised by decades of war.
