Sumaira returns to Pak spending 4 years in Bengaluru detention centre

Islamabad: Sumaira Rehman who had been detained in India for four years over visa expiry returned home, reports say.

Pakistani High Commission officials accompanied Sumaira and her four-year-old daughter as they left the detention centre in Bengaluru for Wagah border.

Indian authorities handed over both Sumaira and her daughter to their Pakistan counterparts at the Wagah border.

PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui, who had raised her detention at Sensate of Pakistan, disclosed the release, adding that Indian authorities completed all official formalities last week, according to IANS.

He had raised the issue after the Ministry of Interior (MoI) failed to issue a certificate of nationality for her as requested by the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.

Sumaira a woman of Pakistan origin was settled in Qatar when she married an Indian Muslim man named Mohammad Shahab in 2017. Her parents were against the marriage.

Shahab took her to India where the couple settled down. When her visa expired she was sent to jail along with her husband.

The authorities later released Shahab but kept Sumaira in jail, where she gave birth to her daughter, according to the report.

In 2018, the Pakistan High Commission was given consular access to Sumaira.

After meeting her, an official from the High Commission asked MoI in Islamabad to confirm her nationality. The military however ignored the letter.

Sumaira spent four years in Indian jail as well as paying Rs lakh to the Indian government. She collected money through donations, according to the report. Later she was shifted to a detention centre.

Sumaira and her daughter have yet to fulfill all the legal requirements and to complete immigration processes.

Afterwards she would be free to go wherever she wants to go, Siddiqui told media.
