Sheikh Hasina never said US conspired towards her fall: Son

Bangladesh: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina never claimed that the United States conspired towards her ouster, Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed claimed on Sunday. Wazed said that a newspaper report that attributed a particular statement as given by Sheikh Hasina during her resignation was completely false and fabricated, Scroll reported.

Wazed said that he had confirmed with her that she did not make such a statement.

He wrote on X, "The recent resignation statement attributed to my mother published in a newspaper is completely false and fabricated. I have just confirmed with her that she did not make any statement either before or since leaving Dhaka."

However, Scroll said it was unclear which report Wazed was referring to.

It was on August 5 that the Awami League supremo and Bangladesh former PM Sheikh Hasina stepped down from her office and fled to India. This was following weeks of violent, widespread protests and 500-plus deaths.

Meanwhile, The Economic Times and The Print quoted Hasina on Sunday that she was ousted because she refused to hand over the strategic Saint Martin Island to the United States. The island is part of Bangladesh's territory and is located in the Bay of Bengal, off coast Myanmar.

The reports claimed that Hasina's comments were collected via her close associates

But Scroll reports that Hasina had accused Washington of trying to change the rule in Bangladesh in April 2023. She told the Bangladesh Parliament then that the US was trying to eliminate democracy and introduce a government that would not have a democratic existence.
