Indian-origin British politician Rishi Sunak announced that he is running to become the next UK prime minister after Boris Johnson resigned today.

It was Sunak's resignation as Chancellor of the exchequer that triggered the mass resignation of Boris Johnson's cabinet. This further forced him to step down from the position.

He tweeted a video and captioned it: "I am standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister." He added: "Let's restore trust, rebuild the economy, and reunite the country".

Sunak shared the hashtag "#Ready4Rishi" along with the video.

The former chancellor was heard talking about his grandparents' migration to Britain from India. He said that family is everything to him. "My family gave me the opportunities they could only dream of." He added that it was Britain that gave his parents and millions like them a chance to dream of a better life.

Sunak said he got into politics because he wants everyone in the UK to have that same opportunity of being able to give their children a better future. He further said Britain is now facing serious challenges. Sunak encouraged people to make decisions based on honesty and seriousness.

"I want to lead this country in the right direction. My values are non-negotiable. We have had enough division. Politics is a unifying endeavour. I have spent my career bringing people together. That is the only way to succeed," said Sunak.

He concluded the video by saying it is the future and stories of the people of Britain that matter the most.

Rishi Sunak's grandparents are from Punjab. He is married to Akshata Murty, daughter of author Sudha Murthy and Infosys founder NR Narayan Murthy.
