Junta regime slaps fresh corruption charges on Aung San Suu Kyi

Nay Pyi Taw: The military regime in Myanmar has charged fresh corruption charges on its de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The Anti-Corruption Commission in Myanmar found the 75-year-old guilty of bribery and has changed her for committed "corruption using her rank", as quoted by the state-affiliated daily, Global New Light of Myanmar as saying in a report.

The accusations include illegally accepting $600,000 and several kilograms of gold, as well as misusing land.

However, Suu Kyi's lawyer has denied all allegations and described them as "absurd" and "groundless".

"I've never met any statesman more honest and incorruptible as Aung San Suu Kyi," Khin Maung Zaw, the head of her defence team, told DPA news agency.

The Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been under house arrest since the coup on February 1. If proved guilty of corruption charges, Suu kyi could end up in prison for 15 years.

Meanwhile, the Myanmar judiciary has already charged her with half a dozen offences, including violating foreign trade laws, violating coronavirus measures and inciting sedition.

It is also suspected that the military junta wants to use the proceedings to keep her out of politics permanently.
