text_fieldsJanuary 24 marks the seventh International Day of Education, a global observance established by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to recognise the pivotal role of education in promoting peace and sustainable development.
This year’s theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” emphasises how education can empower individuals to navigate and influence the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and technology.
The UNGA declared International Day of Education on December 3, 2018, through resolution 73/25, aiming to showcase the transformative power of education in achieving global goals and fostering a better future. Nigeria, along with 58 other nations, co-drafted the resolution, highlighting the global commitment to equitable and high-quality education for all.
This year’s theme focuses on equipping people with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, adapt to, and shape the technological landscape shaped by AI. The theme also underscores the importance of maintaining human agency amidst increasing automation and innovation.
The International Day of Education highlights the transformative power of education in driving progress across several key areas. It emphasises education's role in promoting peace and development by fostering resilient and harmonious societies. Additionally, quality education supports Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) while contributing to the achievement of other SDGs.
The day also calls for collaboration among governments, organizations, businesses, and individuals to make education universally accessible, underscoring its importance in shaping a sustainable and equitable future.
UNESCO, the UN’s specialised agency for education, spearheads the annual observance of International Day of Education. It works to raise awareness and inspire action to ensure that education continues to drive progress, even as the world grapples with rapid technological changes.
