In a move to enhance global internet infrastructure, Meta has announced Project Waterworth, its most ambitious subsea cable initiative to date.

This multi-billion-dollar, multi-year investment aims to strengthen the scale and reliability of digital connectivity worldwide by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into subsea cable deployment and maintenance.

Project Waterworth is designed to optimise the efficiency and resilience of subsea networks by leveraging advanced machine learning models. By predicting and mitigating potential disruptions, Meta seeks to ensure reliable and high-speed internet access across multiple regions, including the United States, India, Brazil, and South Africa.

The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in facilitating economic growth, digital inclusion, and technological innovation.

As part of its global investment, Meta is prioritising India - a key market witnessing a rapid digital transformation.

The company is bringing one of the world's most advanced and longest subsea cable systems to enhance connectivity between India, the U.S., and other strategic locations. A Meta spokesperson highlighted that this initiative aligns with India's growing demand for digital services, reinforcing the company’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure, boosting economic cooperation, and driving technological advancements.

“This multi-billion-dollar investment will span over 50,000 km, connecting five continents and significantly improving the scale and reliability of digital highways that power Meta’s apps and services,” the spokesperson stated.

The project is expected to be operational by the end of the decade.

With over 95% of international data traffic relying on subsea cables, initiatives like Project Waterworth are essential for the digital economy. Meta’s investment will open three new high-speed oceanic corridors, ensuring seamless digital communication, supporting AI-driven applications, and enhancing global video streaming, online transactions, and other digital services.
