D Gukesh’s remarkable victory in the World Chess Championship has brought immense joy to his family, but it also brought back memories of the financial struggles they endured in his pursuit of success.

J Padmakumari, Gukesh’s mother, was too nervous to watch her son’s title match against Ding Liren in Singapore, avoiding her mobile phone and computer throughout the day. However, when her sister arrived at their home with the good news, Padmakumari was overwhelmed with emotion. "I couldn't believe it and I cried for 10 minutes," she shared, still in disbelief before heading to meet her son, who has become a national sensation.

Reflecting on the journey that led to this moment, Padmakumari recalled the sacrifices her family made to support Gukesh’s chess career.

Her husband, Rajnikanth, a former ENT surgeon, left his lucrative profession to travel with their son, while Padmakumari, a microbiologist, became the sole breadwinner. "It was a moment to remember all the sacrifices we made, especially Gukesh's father," Padmakumari said, acknowledging the support they received from family, friends, and well-wishers.

Gukesh himself has always been aware of the hardships his parents faced. In a heartfelt statement after his victory, he mentioned that during difficult times in 2017 and 2018, when finances were tight, friends of his parents stepped in to sponsor his tournaments. His parents had to make significant lifestyle changes to support his chess career. "My parents made the most sacrifices," Gukesh admitted.

Beyond the financial challenges, Padmakumari emphasized the personal discipline Gukesh demonstrated from a young age. "Gukesh worked really hard from childhood," she said, acknowledging his immense focus and dedication to the game. The family is overjoyed that all the sacrifices have culminated in Gukesh's World Chess Championship victory, and Padmakumari can’t wait to reunite with her son. "I just want to see him now," she said.
