Born 126 days early, world's most premature twins mark first birthday

Ontario: Adiah Laelynn and Adrial Luka Nadarajah are two Canadian twins who hold the Guinness record for the most premature twins who have now turned one year old. They were born after 152 days instead of 266 days.

Their mother Shakina Rajendram went into labour after just 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy. That is over four months early. Guinness World Records said that the doctors told the mom that the pregnancy was a loss and the babies had a zero percent chance of survival. The press release said that if the twins were born even an hour earlier, no attempt to save them would have been fruitful.

The twins also hold the title of 'lightest twins at birth'. Adiah was born 23 minutes before her brother, Adrial, weighing 330 gms and 420 gms. They were born with delicate skin that is nearly transparent and their eyes were fused shut.

Twins were kept at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto for almost six months while they fought complications like brain bleeding, fluid management, sepsis, and breathing. Shakina said Adiah has been growing "really well" since being discharged but Adrial was admitted to the hospital twice due to infections and respiratory issues.

"We’re amazed that our twins have the record title. But beyond that, I think what we’re really happy about and passionate about is that this is going to help push the dialogue on viability. We do hope this is a record that gets broken," said the twin's father in a video. "I was just in tears. I felt so distraught that I wasn’t able to hold the babies for just another half hour," said the mother.

Adiah and Adriah broke the previous record of being born 125 days early by Keely and Kambry Ewoldt in the US in 2018.
