BJP MP wants socialism removed from Preamble
text_fieldsNew Delhi: BJP MP in Rajya Sabha, Rakesh Sinha is moving a private resolution seeking the government for a amendment to remove the word “ Socialism” from the Preamble to Constitution.
The resolution says that the word socialism entered in the constitution following the 42 amendment act in 1976 after the Emergency was imposed leading to the suspension of fundamental rights.
Dubbing the word as “redundant”, the BJP leader aruges that it should be dropped in favour of creating a space for “economic thinking without a particular thought”.
When asked by The Indian Express about why he didn’t object the word ‘ Secularism’, he said there could be many views on the word, and some might feel it was still required.
According to Sinha, insertion of the word in the Preamble during the emergency was a political gimmick, because the Indian constitution has egalitarian provisions.
A government advertisement on Republic Day in 2015 stirred controversy after it featured the preamble with the words “secular” and “socialist” missing.
