Kupwara (J&K): Prime Minister Narendra Modi cannot win the hearts of Kashmiris by using guns, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said on Wednesday.

Addressing an election gathering in this northern district, Azad said: "Modi wants to win the hearts of Kashmiris with the gun. Nobody can win hearts with the help of the gun. There was one in Germany who used guns but ended up killing himself.

"What is the reason that the situation (in Jammu and Kashmir) which had improved by 2014 has again worsened like 1900-91," Azad asked.

"If any single person is responsible for this, it is the Prime Minister of this country, Narendra Modi."

Referring to the sacrifices by security personnel fighting militants, he said: "I salute those who gave up their lives but there were some spoilers who killed unarmed people for their promotion and money."

The Congress leader called the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee "a big leader who was a leader of the public" but said that Modi "is the leader of television".
