Malegaon blasts case: SC rejects Lt Col Purohit's plea
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to hear the plea of Lt-Col Srikant Prasad Purohit seeking a SIT probe into his claims of abduction and custodial torture in connection with the 2008 Malegoan blast case.
A Bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Naveen Sinha and K M Joseph said entertaining the petition at this stage might impact the ongoing trial in the case.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Purohit, told the Bench that the issue raised by Purohit in his plea had to be looked into. Since the NIA was seized of the matter, it could look into it, Salve said The Bench asked him to raise the issue before the trial court.
Purohit had moved the apex court on August 27, seeking a court-monitored SIT probe into his alleged abduction, illegal detention and torture by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad. He also sought compensation for the ‘illegal detention’. Purohit is currently out on bail, granted by the SC last year.
Six people had died when an IED, strapped on a motorcycle, went off in Malegaon on September 29, 2008.
