CPM not to join national-level opposition alliance for 2019 polls

New Delhi: Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM on Monday said it wouldn’t be part of a pan-India opposition alliance for the 2019 general election.

Speaking at a press conference following the three-day meeting of the party’s central committee, CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said the main task of the party would be to defeat BJP.

“A grand alliance on the national front is not possible. The main task in front of the CPM is to defeat the BJP. We will support to defeat the BJP. If alliances are looked at state-wise, we can look into it,” said Yechury. However, he did not rule out the possibility of a post-poll alliance.

The central committee, which had met here to discuss electoral strategy of the party, considered defeating BJP as its main task.

Also, it aimed at increasing the strength of CPM and the Left in the Lok Sabha and form an alternative secular government at the Centre.

The apex committee also decided to contest elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in some seats, while campaigning against BJP in the rest of the seats.
