Sheikh Mohammed launches ambitious 'Dubai Walk' project to transform city for pedestrians

Dubai has announced a groundbreaking initiative to enhance pedestrian accessibility and sustainability through an extensive walking network named 'Dubai Walk.' The project, spanning 3,300 kilometers, was revealed on December 7 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This ambitious development is part of the emirate’s ongoing efforts to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, following its initiatives to promote cycling.

The project’s first phase will begin at two key locations: the Museum of the Future and Al Ras, offering a blend of futuristic innovation and historical charm. The pathways at the Museum of the Future will highlight Dubai’s forward-thinking vision with features like a two-kilometre-long bridge, climate-controlled walkways, open spaces, and commercial hubs. These pathways will connect significant urban centers, including the Dubai World Trade Centre, Emirates Towers and the Dubai International Financial Centre, ensuring seamless access to metro stations and other vital locations.

In contrast, the Al Ras pathways will transport pedestrians into Dubai’s rich past. Stretching 15 kilometers, this trail will weave through historical and waterfront areas while incorporating green spaces and public displays that celebrate the city’s heritage.

The larger 'Dubai Walk' project includes the construction of 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels, 112 kilometers of waterfront pathways, 124 kilometers of green walking trails, and 150 kilometers of rural and mountainous paths. Innovative cooling systems will be integrated into the corridors between buildings, ensuring year-round comfort for pedestrians.

This initiative underscores Dubai’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility and creating a livable city. By blending history, modernity and technology, 'Dubai Walk' reflects the emirate’s vision for an inclusive and dynamic future.
