Trump approves $7.4 billion arms sale to Israel amid ceasefire concerns
text_fieldsThe United States has approved a $7.4 billion arms deal with Israel, supplying the country with a range of bombs, missiles, and related equipment.
The State Department formally cleared the sale, which includes $6.75 billion worth of bombs, guidance kits, and fuses, along with an additional $660 million in Hellfire missiles, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).
The DSCA claimed that the sale is intended to enhance Israel’s ability to counter current and future threats, bolster homeland security, and act as a deterrent against regional adversaries. The inclusion of Hellfire missiles, a key component of Israel’s air defense arsenal, will further reinforce the Israeli Air Force’s capacity to protect the country’s borders, critical infrastructure, and civilian areas.
Israel has been engaged in a highly destructive military campaign in Gaza since October 2023, following a large-scale attack by Hamas. The conflict has led to widespread devastation across the Palestinian territory, resulting in massive displacement. However, a ceasefire has been in place since last month, facilitating a pause in hostilities and the release of hostages taken by Hamas.
The latest arms deal comes despite previous concerns over civilian casualties in Gaza. During his presidency, Joe Biden temporarily blocked the transfer of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel due to their destructive power. However, Donald Trump, after returning to office, reportedly approved the delayed shipment, signaling a shift in US policy.
Although the State Department has authorised the sale, the deal still requires Congressional approval. Given Israel’s status as Washington’s closest Middle Eastern ally, it is unlikely that lawmakers will obstruct the transactions.
