Makkah launches Hydrogen bus trial to advance clean energy, sustainability
text_fieldsMakkah has commenced the second trial of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered bus as part of its efforts to integrate sustainable transportation solutions. The initiative is overseen by the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, the Transport General Authority, the General Directorate of Civil Defense, and the General Department of Traffic.
The trial is a key step in implementing a memorandum of understanding between the Royal Commission and the Ministry of Energy, focusing on hydrogen-powered buses for designated routes. According to the Saudi Press Agency, the initiative aims to assess the viability of hydrogen technology in public transportation, develop commercial and technical expertise and gather insights for potential future expansion.
A critical objective of the project is to raise public awareness of hydrogen technology and its benefits in reducing emissions, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals for environmental sustainability. The introduction of hydrogen fuel cell buses is expected to contribute to the development of clean energy-based transportation solutions, enhancing the quality of life in the region.
The initiative also aims to improve services for pilgrims and Umrah performers by offering more efficient and environmentally friendly transportation options within the holy sites. Integrated into the broader Makkah Bus Project, the trial will operate with a structured plan ensuring safety and security, including a designated route and a mobile hydrogen fueling station.
Key areas of evaluation for the trial will include efficiency, performance, operational sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and passenger comfort. The findings will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Makkah’s public transportation system, supporting its transition toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious service.
