Thiruvananthapuram: Congress-led UDF opposition in the State Saturday held protest dharnas across the state against the new liquor policy of the LDF government.

Inaugurating the agitation in front of the Secretariate, the administrative hub here, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala said the new policy would result in the free flow of liquor in the state.

He also alleged corruption behind the CPI(M)-led LDF government’s decision to reopen the liquor bars, closed by the previous UDF government as part of its target to achieve total prohibition within ten years.

KPCC president M M Hassan, who inaugurated the dharna in Kozhikode, alleged that the new policy would not only contribute to the state exchequer but also to the ruling party also.

The Kerala government has unveiled its new liquor policy last month by deciding to give licenses to operate liquor bars in three star and above classified hotels besides allowing serving of toddy in these hotels from July.

Besides the opposition, a section of Church also came out strongly against the new liquor policy of the government and threatened to launch stir.
