Jishnu’s death: Govt announces solatium of Rs 10 lakh to family
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: The State government on Wednesday announced a financial aid of Rs 10 lakh to the family of Jishnu, an engineering student who committed suicide in a college hostel in Thrissur district allegedly following harassment by the college management.
The Cabinet that met her also decided to constitute a committee, led by Education Minister C Raveendranath, to study the issues in the self-finance colleges.
Earlier, taking a serious view of the alleged suicide of the student, the state Human Rights Commission had sought a report on the matter.
Commission Member K Mohankumar directed the Thrissur District Superintendent of Police, Principal of the private Nehru College of Engineering at Pambady and its Registrar to file reports within two weeks.
18-year old Jishnu, a computer science student, was found hanging in the hostel bathroom last week.
Students alleged that authorities had harassed him after he was caught for 'copying' in an examination.
Meanwhile, a protest march taken out by the students’ wing of the Congress, the KSU, on Wednesday turned violent as a section of them went on a rampage in the office of the Self-Finance Engineering College Managements’ Association in Kochi, damaging properties. The association officials were holding a meeting when around 30 KSU workers took out the protest march.
