Will continue legal fight against erring medical colleges: Pinarayi

Kannur: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Saturday said the government would approach the Kerala High Court again in the wake of the Supreme Court verdict on self-financing medical colleges, which have not signed a seat-sharing agreement with the State government.
“The government will continue its legal fight,” said Pinarayi.
On Friday, the Supreme Court had rejected the State government’s petition against the charging of higher fee for the MBBS course at the KMCT, Kannur, and Karuna medical colleges.
The government had filed the appeal in the apex court against the HC verdict that allowed the three colleges to hike their annual fees. The SC rejected the appeal, saying it will not be able to intervene at such a late stage, as the admission process was to get over by Friday evening. Further, it let the HC decide on disputes regarding fee structure.
The High Court had allowed Kannur Medical College to collect Rs.10 lakh; Karuna Medical College Rs.7.5 lakh; and KMCT Medical College Rs.10 lakh.
