New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission on Friday issued a notice to Karnataka over reports that a Dalit nursing student from Kerala was forced by her seniors to drink phenyl while ragging.

The NHRC notice as it took cognizance of the issue through media reports that the student, studying at Al Qamar College of Nursing in Karnataka's Gulbarga, was forced by her seniors to drink phenyl while ragging her due to which her food pipe was burnt and internal organs were damaged.

"She is from Kerala and now battling for life at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Kozhikode in the state (Kerala). Reportedly, the brutal incident took place two weeks ago and both the Gulbarga police and the college authority tried to hush up the case," said the statement from the commission.

Following the report, the commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Karnataka as well as the District Collector and Superintendent of Police, Kozhikode, calling for reports on action taken in the matter within four weeks.
