Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader V.S Achuthanandan Friday has said the LDF’s liquor policy is to bring down the liquor consumption in phases in the state.

“The LDF’s liquor policy is very clear. Our policy is to bring down the liquor consumption in phases and to implement the ban on liquor gradually. We consider Yechuri’s remark that the closed bars in the state would not be reopened is part of implementing this policy,” Achuthanandan said in a post on his Facebook page.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury had said that the LDF would not reverse any of the decisions of the Congress-led UDF government on closed liquor bars, if it comes to power.

"If the LDF comes to power, it will not reverse any of the decisions already taken by the Kerala government on the liquor policy," said Yechury.

"Our policy has always been to further reduce liquor consumption in Kerala society. So our effort is to further reduce liquor consumption," he said.

Significantly, CPI(M) politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan had stated that LDF was not for total prohibition, but for abstinence.
