Will not accept Muslims in Backward Class list: Union Min Bandi Sanjay
text_fieldsHyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Thursday strongly opposed the inclusion of Muslims in the Backward Class (BC) list, warning that such a move would trigger a revolt from the entire Hindu society.
The BJP leader asserted that granting BC status to Muslims would deprive backward communities of their rightful reservations. He was responding to the Congress-led Telangana government’s decision to pass a bill in the Assembly seeking 42% reservations for BCs and forward it to the Centre for approval in Parliament.
Reiterating the BJP’s firm opposition to religion-based reservations, Bandi Sanjay accused the Congress of political opportunism. “Despite knowing the BJP’s stance, Congress is foolishly trying to push this onto the Centre. This only proves its insincerity in implementing BC reservations. If Muslims are included in the BC category, it will deprive BCs of their rightful share, and the entire Hindu society will revolt. Congress will pay the price in the upcoming MLC elections. If they are honest, they should immediately remove Muslims from the BC list,” he posted on ‘X’.
In Telangana, certain backward Muslim groups currently receive a 4% reservation in education and employment under the BC-E category.
Bandi Sanjay also challenged the Congress to fulfill its commitment to BCs, accusing it of backtracking on its promises. “As per its ‘420 promises,’ Congress must ensure 42% reservations for BCs. Instead, it is betraying them. I urge all BCs to see through this deception,” he declared.
In addition to his remarks on reservations, Bandi Sanjay lashed out at the Congress government for delaying local body elections, claiming that the party lacks the courage to contest. He warned that postponing the polls would harm Telangana, as the 15th Finance Commission grants could be stalled.
“Congress is blatantly violating the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, which mandate local body elections every five years. Rahul Gandhi claims to uphold the Constitution, but merely holding it in hand is not enough—it must be implemented. Without elected sarpanches, village assemblies and development initiatives will come to a halt. Congress is stalling elections solely out of fear of defeat,” he added.
