New Delhi: Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and Delhi riot accused Umar Khalid was granted an interim bail of seven days to attend his sister's wedding. Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted relief from December 23 to December 30.

Khalid is charged with UAPA over allegations of a "larger conspiracy" to provoke riots. He has been in jail since September 2020.

The student activist was acquitted by Delhi's Karkardooma court earlier this month in the stone-throwing case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. He and United Against Hate member Khalid Saifi remained in jail as they are charted with UAPA as well.

The Delhi High Court had observed that the meetings organising protests against CAA were attended by Khalid which suggests that the UAPA charges are prima facie true. "There is no merit in the bail appeal. Bail appeal is dismissed," said a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Rajnish Bhatnagar.
