Those with 4 wives have issues with Uniform Civil Code: BJP leader

Mumbai: BJP leader and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Friday that only those who have multiple wives have an issue with the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Speaking at the World Hindu Economic Forum in Mumbai, the saffron party leader said that the Goa government is promoting Hindu culture in the state to attract tourists.

The BJP chief minister said that it was Goa which implemented UCC for the first time in the country and claimed that no communities faced any issue. He made the statements a day after the Union Cabinet approved the “One Nation One Election” bill. Both UCC and One Nation One Election are on the BJP’s agenda and were strongly opposed by the Opposition.

Sawant claimed that UCC never caused issues among Hindus, Catholics and Muslims since 1961, when the state was liberated.

He used the widely popular slogan ‘Ek Hain To Safe Hain’ to assert that a person should only have one spouse and reiterated that those with four wives have issues with UCC.

He attempted to explain that the problem with the nationwide implementation of UCC is that post-marriage, both husband and wife get an equal share in property under the scheme.

“If I have only one wife, I will not face any issue with property division since I do not have to share it with three or four wives,” Free Press Journal quoted the minister.

He said that tourists have started coming to Goa to visit temples as it is called Dakshin Kashi (Southern Kashi). Through international film festivals and annual carnivals, the state government is trying to promote Hindu culture to attract tourists, he added.
