Rajya Sabha resumes normal functioning after days of washout

New Delhi: After multiple days of disruptions, the Rajya Sabha resumed normal functioning on Tuesday, addressing issues of public importance during the Zero Hour and Question Hour.

The House had been paralyzed since the Winter Session began on November 25, with opposition members raising uproar over issues such as allegations of corruption against the Adani Group and the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh.

Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar revealed that he had received 42 adjournment notices under Rule 267, the highest in over 25 years. Dhankhar did not accept any of the notices, stating it was impossible to accommodate multiple requests, and expressed concern over a notice being made public before its consideration, calling it a serious breach of protocol. He urged members to uphold ethical standards and announced plans to discuss the matter with party leaders.

During the resumed session, the Samajwadi Party staged a walkout during Zero Hour, joined briefly by Trinamool Congress members. Despite this, the House proceeded with scheduled discussions.

DMK member M Mohamed Abdulla and MDMK leader Vaiko raised concerns about Cyclone Fengal's impact in Tamil Nadu, while BJD member Subhasish Khuntia called for expediting the proposed international airport in Puri, Odisha.

Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav and Congress leader Pramod Tiwari brought attention to the recent violence in Sambhal, highlighting its gravity during the session.

The functioning of the House brought a sense of relief as it marked a return to parliamentary discussions after prolonged disruptions.
