New Delhi: The Supreme Court, upholding the Kerala High Court judgement, said that one could not get a reservation in other states with a reservation certificate from the state of residence. The top court bench comprising Justices Ajay Rastogi and CT Ravikumar noted that reservation in each state is determined depending on the circumstances in each state.

The court made the ruling on the appointment of B Ismail, a Karnataka resident, at the IT department of Kannur University. The court quashed the appointment.

After Kerala High Court quashed Ismail's appointment, he, along with Kannur University, approached the apex court, challenging the ruling.

The university argued that he was appointed on the basis of a national level interview conducted under the UGC rules of 2018. Since Muslims are OBCs in both Kerala and Karnataka, there was nothing wrong with Ismail's appointment to the reserved post, the university had argued.
