Mathura: Shahi Idgah Mosque in Mathura will be surveyed by the Archaeological Survey of India from January 2 upon the orders of a court in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura. A report will be submitted on January 20.

A civil court in Mathura earlier dismissed the case under the Places of Worship Act of 1991 which maintains the religious status of any place of worship as it was on August 15, 1947. However, the Ayodhya temple-mosque case involving the 16th-century Babri mosque was an exception.

The order is based on a lawsuit filed by Vishnu Gupta of the Hindu Sena. The petition claims that the mosque is built on the birthplace of Lord Krishna (Krishna Janmabhoomi) on the orders of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1669-70 in the 13.37-acre premises of Katra Keshav Dev temple. It is one of the many lawsuits by Hindu outfits demanding the removal of the 17th-century mosque.

The civil court also stated that if the Krishna Janmabhoomi suit is admitted, many worshippers may approach courts with various cases. Petitioners appealed against the order and claimed that they have a right to approach the court as devotees of Lord Krishna.

They claim to have the right to worship the actual birthplace of God.
