A 40-year-old Kerala fish vendor was at the receiving end of good fortune when he won the lottery hours after the bank served an attachment notice.

On October 12, the bank sent him a notice for not being able to pay back a loan amount of around Rs 12 lakh. On the same day, he won the first prize in the Akshaya lottery of Rs 70 lakh. The bank loan of Rs 9 lakh was taken to build his house.

Pookunju told PTI that his family was in despair after receiving the notice and did not know what to do. He did not know whether selling the property would be a good move because they have two children who are studying. He added that besides the bank loan, his father had racked up a debt of around Rs 5 lakh buying lottery tickets.

Pookunju received the notice around 12 noon on Wednesday after missing a loan payment deadline, and at 3:00 pm that same day, he found he had won the lottery, reported Onmanorama. He has been struggling with finances since his income comes from selling fish in his scooter in the northern Mynagappally region.

Pookunju and his wife are planning to pay off their debts after receiving the lottery winnings. Their next goal is to ensure their children receive a good education.
